Previous Job Description #1
Sideline Auto Parts Inc. 1996-July 1998 Owner/Manager - Responsible for all aspects of this
wholesale/retail new and used auto and truck parts business. Significant responsibilities
included purchasing, inventory control, accounting, arranging deliveries and customer
service.
This is a brief overview of the automotive parts industry as I see it. In the days of yore,
most people drove a
GM, Ford or Dodge car or truck (you can throw in Toyota, Datsun and VW too) - thus there were
fewer types of products to supply parts for, these companys made the same basic vehicle
for many years, people often worked on their own vehicles - they could change a starter,
alternator or a radiator themselves. The wrecked vehicles were inexpensive to purchase,
in many situations taxes were less costly and wages were lower.
I believe that vehicles are built much better today and they have better warranties.
The business used to thrive on finding parts for customers and providing service,
today the Internet has allowed those wholesale and retail customers to search for their
own parts, less need for our service. When I stopped working at the established business,
I continued working until 12/31/98 by myself, without compentation
to pay off the debt that had accumulated.
